How well do you know your own interior design style?
Interior style will differ from person to person, what might make one person visually engaged in their interior space may have opposite effects on the next person.
Being interior stylists, we believe an interior is an extension of you and your personality so we always aim to reflect you and your dreams for how you see your future with the space when we chose out design style. If you already understand your style, it is easier to create a special dynamic, which is aesthetically engaging, pleasing and stimulating.
You can easily figure out what your style is, an example of how to figure this out could be to follow these three simple exercises:
- Brainstorm key words that define you, your style, your hair/makeup or sfashion, favourite books, flowers, art, hobbies, the architecture of your home or buildings you like, music you enjoy, the type and amount of jewellery you wear, the landscape/terrain surrounding your home, colours you like, moods you create/or are trying to create
- Make a list of treasures you would like to have in your home. Making a list of the items you have against the items you want to have will help you save money from incorrect guesswork buying the wrong things. It will help you to understand and research the products available to you within these categories in more depth, it will also help you cut out the stuff you no longer need.
- Inspiration photos. The most basic form of inspiration in understanding what you like, by compiling a collection of images, you can understand what your like, find trends etc in what makes you engaged, this will in turn help you deepen your research and help you to design a space, truly bespoke and personal to you.
There are so many categories of design style out there, don’t feel like you are obliged to just stuck to one style, be confident and if you like details from more than one style explore the ways you can combine the styles into a flowing space. This knowledge of what works in an interior comes with experience and practice. Being brave enough to experiment will help you gain this knowledge faster.
You can understand the variety of different design avenues available to you, as well as what styles you like better just by watching a television programme, looking at a book or searching online. There is a wide range of mediums available to you to explore these different avenues of design.
Every interior designer, in their either education or early stages of their career learns that they need to embody and develop a design style, which will help to brand not only their work, but their portfolio as well.
